California Hunter Education

Kern Shooting Sports sponsors the official California Department of Fish and Wildlife Hunter Education courses that are required for all hunters. There are two ways to take the class. Pre-registration is required.

  • Two-Day Live Instruction – All day Saturday in the classroom. Sunday morning students meet at Five Dogs Range where they shoot a .22 rifle and cross an obstacle with a firearm. At 1:00 pm students are back in the classroom for a review session and to take the test. The cost is $25.00. Classes are held on a weekend in January, March, May, July, August, and October. See the exact dates on our Calendar.

  • Live Fire Session
  • Requires one full weekend
  • Online Class – Students are “self-taught” by following the required material on the internet and passing an online test. The cost for the course completion certificate varies by class provider. You must then attend a 4-hour follow-up class in order to finalize training, pass your final written exam, and get your California Hunter Safety Education Card. The cost for the follow-up class is $13.00. Follow-up Classes are held on Monday evenings immediately following each Two-Day Live Instruction class described above.
